Double-Sided Apparel & Screen Print Study
The Challenge:
To design a double-sided merch print for seminal Detroit noise-rock heavyweights Laughing Hyenas. Known for a lethal mix of drug excess, raw blues catharsis, reckless abandon, the artwork needed to capture the band’s visceral energy while maintaining the functional requirements of a clean, high-contrast, production-ready screen print.
The Process & Design Choices:
The front graphic features a high-contrast halftone conversion of an intense live performance, framed by a imposing, serif typeface displaying the band name and their legendary album title, "You Can't Pray a Lie." In sharp counter-balance, the back print shifts to a candid, intimate snapshot of the band in their natural habitat, gathered around a table playing cards, drinking, and smoking with that same visceral attitude. This front-to-back juxtaposition contrasts the explosive public fury of their live show with the gritty, unpolished, unapologetic reality behind the music.
The Result & Technical Execution:
Built as a double-sided white-on-black (or inverted black-on-white) screen print, the images were processed through precision halftones. This ensured that fine details, such as the guitar headstock, microphone cables, smoke trails, and subtle facial expressions—burn cleanly into the screens without fill-in or detail loss. The resulting apparel print delivers maximum ink opacity, sharp typographic edges, and a classic, archival aesthetic.
