Doublethink & Screen Print Study
The Challenge:
To construct a visual warning against state censorship, forced compliance, and the erosion of objective truth. Titled as a dual homage to George Orwell’s critique of totalitarianism and the fierce anti-establishment spirit of The Clash’s 1977 anthem "Complete Control ", the project aims to illustrate how doublethink logic is used to enforce total political submission.
The Process & Design Choices:
The artwork centers on an ultra-high-contrast halftone portrait of George Orwell, sliced across the eyes, nose, and mouth by jagged, torn-paper strips. These paper "slashes" physically redact his features while housing the iconic quote: "In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." In the lower corner, the absurd mathematical lie
2 + 2 = 5, sits in a dark, brush-painted badge. Executed in a raw, hand-scrawled typeface, it resembles underground graffiti scribbled by a dissident, contrasting the cold reality of state control with an unyielding act of human defiance.

The Result & Technical Execution:
Prepared as a high-density, single-color black print for light-colored apparel and paper prints (or an inverted white pass for dark garments), the design utilizes a coarse halftone. This technical configuration retains sharp focal clarity in Orwell’s eyes and line work while allowing the torn paper edges and distressed brush typography to print with crisp, high-contrast definition without losing detail in production.
