Vinyl Packaging & Art Direction Study
The Challenge:
To conceptualize and execute a complete vinyl record packaging suite, including front & back sleeve, and a two-sided lyric insert for post-punk/darkwave act No Gossip In Braille. The visual language needed to mirror the band's maudlin, emotionally resonant sonic identity: a blend of icy synth lines, cold drum machines, chorused guitars, and tender vocal delivery reminiscent of genre pioneers like Asylum Party, The Cure, and The Chameleons. Sounding at once familiar yet simultaneously new.
The Process & Design Choices:
The visual narrative relies entirely on original photography and tactile set design to ground the music's meld of nostalgia and modernity:
Front Outer Sleeve: Features a dramatic architectural shot taken in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (2001), capturing a towering structure silhouetted against a blazing sun to physically embody the album title, Bend Toward Perfect Light.
Back Outer Sleeve: Utilizes a textured landscape photograph from Great Sand Dunes National Park in Southern Colorado, washed in a cool mint tone to frame the minimalist track listing within a vast, desolate expanse.
Inner Insert (Front & Back): Anchored by custom studio photography of dried flower bouquets suspended upside down against a draped bedsheet, a deliberate visual metaphor mimicking a floral mausoleum. Overlaid on the front insert is the bold, circular geometric "NGIB" band logotype, while the reverse side uses a soft, warm background shift to present the full lyric sheet revisiting the same motif.
The Result & Technical Execution:
Designed as a high-end 12" LP package with a matching front/back insert, the layout balances clean typography with emotive photography. The contrast between the stark, cold exterior sleeve hues and the organic, decay-focused interior photography creates a rich unboxing experience for vinyl collectors, translating the band's dark soundscape into a physical keepsake.
